What is Apple's iCloud Private Relay?

Apple's iCloud Private Relay is a privacy feature new to iOS15 iCloud+ subscribers.  The Private Relay prevents apps like Family Zone Connect from viewing someone’s internet traffic by hiding their IP address and encrypting their DNS traffic. This can prevent your filtering rules from applying to your Child’s Device.

You can find out more about this feature in Apple’s help article.

What do I need to do about it?

You only need to take action if your child has an active iCloud+ subscription, or if you have a subscription that you share with them through Apple Apple Family Sharing. Here’s what you can do:

My (Parent) device

You don’t need to do anything. Your devices won’t be affected by this change.

My Child’s device

Family Zone Connect will be able to manage the Private Relay for you in the very near future. In the meantime, here are some things you can do to make sure your filter rules keep applying:

  1. If you have an iCloud+ subscription, check if your Child’s Device has been updated to iOS 15.

  2. If your Child’s Device uses OS 14 or older, you may want to temporarily disable automatic iOS software updates.

    1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update

    2. Tap Automatic Updates

    3. Make sure the toggle is set to off (grey)

  3. If your Child’s Device is already running  iOS 15, you can disable the Private Relay

    1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Private Relay

    2. Make sure the toggle is set to off (grey)

When should I turn automatic iOS software updates back on?

You should turn automatic iOS software updates back on after Family Zone Connect updates on your child's device.

How can children enable the Private Relay?

If your child has access to a  paid iCloud+ subscription (either their own or through Family Sharing), they can enable the Relay by going to Settings > iCloud > Private Relay > Enable and changing the toggle to On.

Can Apple Private Relay be enabled on iOS 14 (and older versions)?

No, the Private Relay only works on devices running iOS 15. Find out what version of iOS you have.

Will my Child’s iOS devices automatically upgrade to iOS 15?

Yes, if your Child’s iPhone or iPad has automatic software updates turned on. You can disable

  1.  Go to Settings > General > Software Update

  2. Tap Automatic Updates

  3. Make sure the toggle is set to off (grey)

Is iCloud Private Relay enabled by default?
